Of habits great and small

I am a creature of habit when it come to certain things. I:cross myself when entering a Catholic church, smile at little children, begin to research topics via Google or wikipedia, and read Petrea Burchard's pasadenadailyphoto.blogspot.com.

Her writing is lyrical and personal, touches on something that is in our neighborhood or our local area, and is usually very thoughtful.

Her blog today highlighted the restlessness that can set in when you are cooped up. And of those who don't have the option to be restless because of the weather. Today Petrea shared a poem by Carl Sandburg. The first stanza reads:

Let us sit by a hissing steam radiator a winter's day, gray
wind pattering frozen raindrops on the window,
And let us talk about milk wagon drivers and grocery delivery
boys."

Reading this got me to thinking about our 21st century wagon drivers and delivery boys. It brought to mind the guys I see on Trashday, the young woman with trensas who brings the UPS packages, and the good folks who are working underground or in tight quarters making sure that our house has heat, light, and water.

Remembering to smile when I see them wouldn't be a bad habit to add to my list.

Thanks Petrea.

  1. Oh yes, that is the point, isn't it? I'm so glad I got to talk to the mailman yesterday and thank him for going out in that weather.

    Thanks, Roberta.

"...usually" thoughtful. Not always! Heh heh!

  2. Well, often enough for usual. I'll write something else another day and highlight the chuckle factor.
