La Cumparsita/Si supieras

"Si supiera, que aun dentro de mi alma, conservo aquel cariño que tuve para ti...
If you just knew that now as ever within my soul, I'm holding on to that same affection I felt for you before".
Rodriquez/Contursi/Maroni

La Cumparsita is the tune most people hum, sing, or whistle when they think of tango. The story related to authorship is filled with more twist and turns than you would see on the dance floor of a dance competition.

Tonight Joannie Rochette skated to this song with grace and composure that was awe inspiring. It was clear that her performance came from the strength of her training and of her character. It was only at the end of her performance, that her soft cries for her "Maman", reminded us of the profundity of her recent loss. The Olympic motto, "Swifter, Higher, Stronger" seemed modified to include - deeper, too.

La Cumparista has several lyrics. The love of the Olympian on the ice was a singular expression of devotion, love, and triumph of the human spirit.

My dear friend Joe lost his mother yesterday. I'm sure there were moments when Joannie and her maman, like Joe and his mother here, shared a quiet intense moment of love.
