For some years now we have been working in collaboration with PUSD on the districtwide Cesar Chavez Art & Essay Contest. It began via the efforts of the principal of Madison Elementry, Sandra Macis. I am happy to say that it has grown large enough that formal rubric and matrix are helpful to come to our decisions for winning entries.

Included in the guidelines is a special category for group efforts. The work here was done by students from a Special Day Class.

Their technique is clearly basic; the figures insinuate as much as clearly express. But working with their teacher they show that they understand the important words in the telling of the story and, it seems, the basic ideas of fairness and unity
