One Hundred Plus

Valentine's Day; a day that can strike terror in the hearts of bold men and women.

Must get gift.
Must find perfect rose.
Must have something new and exciting.
Often we feel like prisoners of the must-do.

James and I didn't have to deal with any of the must-dos this year.  We had a quiet Valentine's Day and evening.  We knew that we'd be celebrating on Saturday    Our compadres, Greg and Hilda,  had invited us and two other couples to share an intimate Valentine's Day dinner.

I've posted photos of some of the other parties that we've attended at their house.  Usually there is a minimum of 20 or so people at these gatherings.  Multiple salads, main courses, desserts, and all sorts of things to imbibe.  Music flows throughout the house.  People congregate outside, in the dining room, living room, and the kitchen.

By contrast last night was devoted to four couples who have over 100 years of marriage among them.

The beautiful setting was perfect for "couple remembering": sharing where and how we first met, the proposal, the first really good fight, and the honeymoon.  An evening filled with snippets of our lives.  A chance to share the funny and happy parts of our lives.  The ways that we've grown as couples.

We talked about the similarities that exist in Japanese enka and Mexican ranchera.  What grade we were in when we listened to Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, John Lee Hooker, and Herman's Hermits.  The cities we've visited and the places we want to visit.  A night to quietly rejoice in the lives we've led with our partners and the dreams we have about our futures together.

All of this shared with laughter, yums for the delicious gumbo, and wine.  Dessert was blueberry buckle topped with ice cream and music from the 60s, 70s and 80s.  Dancing while clearing the table wasn't obligatory, but took place anyway.
