July 4, 2011

In thinking about the origin and history of parades all sorts of images occur. The religious procession, the display of military power, the expression of political ideals, the boosterism of a place.

We here in Pasadena seem to have even more variations. We've had a parade connected with Cherry Blossom Festival as well as the Irish Parade and Festival. We have Black History Parade, Doo Dah Parade, and the grand daddy for our area, the Tournament of Roses Parade.

I don't happen to have any 4th of July images to share, but here are some themes you'll find in most parades.

An expression of pride in where you live or where you or your family came from
a chance for a community's elders and youth to come together

a chance for old friends to get together
or a chance to meet new friends and build a broader sense of community.
Happy 4th of July!

  1. Who doesn't love a parade? Thanks for the history...I didn't know Pasadena celebrated a cherry blossom festival. When is it?

  2. So Cal Cherry Blossom Festival began in Pasadena. While it was at Victory Park it had a charming, small parade around a walkway in the park. They donated trees to Pasadena and the trees are planted in the meridian on Sierra Madre Blvd. It now takes place in Los Angeles, in Little Tokyo. Attendance is over 30,000.
